In conjunction with the Art Collaboration Kyoto Fair, In the Flow, pays homage to Kyoto’s rich history and relationship to its cities’ shrines by occupying a gallery space within a 300-year-old traditional incense store. By allowing the scent of incense to set the sensory stage for the exhibition, In the Flow unfolds a unique bridge of artists from Los Angeles and Kyoto, whose works subvert traditional mediums by re-articulating them through their lens. Inspired by the fluid and reciprocal nature of these artists’ works, In the Flow highlights the vigor in which these works move through traditions of their cultures’ past and the recurrent movement towards an integrated present. With each work pushing the boundaries of imagery, color, texture, and scale, a new breath of understanding begins to take form.
Curated by Jenny Hata Blumenfield and Yurina Hattori Roche of Roche x Blumenfield Projects, they merge their gallery and curatorial perspectives to introduce a transitory gallery experience within the cities they operate - Tokyo and Los Angeles. With an emphasis on cross-cultural exchange, together they build from their own hybridized experiences of being half-Japanese.
